Simply Be | Self-Improvement | Note 342
You must assume a higher concept of yourself.
Years ago, while sitting at my desk at Sony Pictures Entertainment waiting on quitting time, I realized I was faking it and trying to make it. I wanted to work with artists and talent as a manager or agent, but I faked being a marketing assistant. In my heart and at my core, I negotiated talent deals. I helped artists build their brands.
The problem was challenging. I spent my days looking at home entertainment data for movies that made their box office exist long ago and were available on DVD.
The solution was straightforward. The only way to become who I wanted to be was to be. I had to take the leap from faking it and ask myself, what do I need to do to make it? Who would I need to become to make it? What would I need to do to stop faking it?
The answer was simple. I had to stop pretending just to pretend and stop faking it until I made it. I had to let go of the notion that I was a marketing assistant because I wasn’t. I needed to become who I wanted to be, so I did.
I became a talent agent. And yes, I still worked as a marketing assistant. But assuming the role and stepping into my true identity changed everything. It opened the door for me to just be.
To reach a higher level of being, you must assume a higher concept of yourself.
If you have a gnawing feeling to be, do, and have something different, you will need to make some changes, starting with becoming who you want to be.
If you don’t decide to be, you will remain as you are.
If you don’t imagine yourself to be, you will remain as you are.
If you don’t believe yourself to be, you will remain as you are.
If you don’t take action to be, you will remain as you are.
Once you decide to be, once you imagine yourself being, when you believe yourself to be, and take action to become, you will reach a higher level of yourself.
And no, you don’t have to fake it till you make it to become who you want to be.
You simply have to be.
