Don’t Get Stuck Starting | Note 137
Why worry about everything being perfect?
On the advice of a brand coach, I am rewriting some copy on my website. Apparently, I’ve not done a good job explaining how I overcame my struggles. This coach told me I’m not effectively sharing my story.
Something that I struggled with for years was getting started. I’m going to let you in on a secret. I am a recovering procrastinator. Once I get started, I’m all in. As I always say, I do everything I say I’m going to do. What I wouldn’t admit to is that it would take me years to actually do it.
I was a chronic procrastinator. I waited until the last minute to do everything. This may sound crazy to many, but I have traveled around the world booking my flight a few days before boarding the plane. I’ve shown up in countries with no hotel reservations. It was bad at one point.
Once I went to Costa Rica, and I didn’t realize until a few hours before my flight that I was flying into the wrong airport. I had to figure out how to travel 4.5-hours across the country to the hotel I booked the night before my flight.
I can go on and on. I wouldn’t wish the kind of procrastination I suffered from on my worst enemy. It was crippling. I learned and experienced some hard lessons, thanks to my inability to get started. Listening to motivational speakers, reading every book I could get my hands on about personal development, and writing encouraging notes to myself helped me get unstuck and stop procrastinating. My goal with this podcast is to help you do the same.
Today’s Note: Don’t Get Stuck Starting
Coming up with a million-dollar idea isn’t tough. Figuring out how to execute your big idea isn’t very difficult either. Actually getting started on your idea, well, that’s the hard part.
You can think about starting. You can talk about starting. You can plan on starting, but you’re only going to start by starting. You’ll never end up starting if you keep thinking about it, talking about it, and getting stuck in the planning phase of it. There is only one way to start, and that’s to start.
Don’t be scared.
Don’t be consumed with every little detail.
Don’t worry about being too old.
And don’t worry about everything being perfect.
Not much is perfect.
Just get going and start.
Don’t get stuck staring.
